Paper versus Plastic

Each time you go to the grocery store in the US,
you are asked the same question at the checkout line: 

Do you want your groceries in paper or plastic bags?

What is a person to do?  What is the most eco-friendly answer to this question?

Well, in the first place, "plastic" is a terrible choice.  Please don't choose plastic bags!
