The Dakotas are a place that makes you travel back to America’s childhood, when this ancient land seemed so new. You lose yourself as you look out at the endless prairie and meet the gaze of a bison, the powerful icon that has survived to stand on the same ground as me. The Badlands trick the mind with colors and slopes almost unworldly, ancient trees, and memories of Native American struggles. The Black Hills stand as a reminder that the prairie’s vastness is not eternal, with shimmering rocks living among trees. Experiencing this amazing land has reminded me what being part of CAC is all about. We see the world from the dirt beneath our feet to the swirling stars above, and we live to protect everything between.
