To my friend Siku,
I am sad to hear
about the polar bears in Point Hope. Hearing
their story reminds me of something my
Grandfather told me about his visit to Tasiilaq,
the big city near my home in East Greenland. A
fisherman in Tasiilaq told my Grandfather that
he saw a young walrus swimming very far from
shore and all alone in the Greenland Sea. The
fisherman brought this news back to the city and
learned from scientists that global warming may
be causing mother walrus’s to leave their pups
as they work hard to swim northward to where the
ice is.
The walruses use the sea ice as a resting and
eating place just like the polar bears. Global
warming is causing danger for my favorite animal
too. I hope there is something we can do.
